What’s The Deal With Size?
In most of life people seem to be interested in getting the popular brand names with things like cars, clothes, food and more. The brand itself is often the selling point, instead of the actual product. It’s not hard to determine why people are applying this same logic to their web hosting needs. It would make sense that the biggest hosting companies in the world would have more experience, be more organized, and that would lead to a more polished and better overall experience, right? On occasion you will find this to be the case, but often in web hosting the smaller company may be a better fit.
First, you need to think of it in terms of organization. Large Web hosting companies might get 100 requests per day for Web hosting, while smaller companies might only get one. What is the difference? Well, while the capabilities of the bigger company are, in every way, going to outmatch those of the smaller company, that smaller company does have one thing that the larger company does not – and that is the need for every new customer!
Since larger companies have so many customers they don’t have the time it takes to pay close attention to each one. If they lose a customer of two because of the lack of attention, it’s not a big deal. A smaller company, on the other hand, relies on every customer they have. They need their customers to be happy to help spread the word about their great host. While getting big may be fine for the pocketbook of the hosting company, it’s not always good for their customers.
With all the advantages that a larger company seems to have, is there anything that smaller hosts have that they can compete with? They will struggle to be able to compete with the breadth of service offerings or other technical advantages, but one thing they generally do much better with is time. If personal service is important to you, you’ll often find it much better with a smaller company.
